SISAL HEMP
A fibre obtained from the leaves of the Agave rigida, and largely grown in Mexico. Mostly used in ropemaking. Also woven into rough fabrics for use of the poorer classes of Mexico. It is considered next to hemp for strength. There are two varieties, one grown in Mexico, Florida, Cuba and the Bahamas, and the other in Yucatan. It is also being grown in East Africa and India. After preparation the fibre is a straight, pale yellow ribbon from 2 feet to 4 feet long. The fibre is very strong, smooth, and has a yellowish colour (see False Sisal hemp)
